Industry Professionals' Costume Origins

20:45

A few professionals in industry who I have asked about how they got into working in costume, while at the taster day at the RSC, so these are how they came to be working there.

Helen, head of dyeing and painting:
Studied fine art followed by theatre design, before working in the props department at the National Theatre, then switching to dyeing at the National.

Anné, dyeing and painting:
Studied applied art, costume making for 2 years, then cutting at theatre school for one year. After work experience at the RSC, she emailed and asked for more time and was given another three months. She then went back as a freelancer, and is now a full-time hire.

Jenny, dyeing and painting:
Completed a contemporary crafts degree using all different media but specialising in textiles. She came on a work placement at the RSC and never left.

Kate, head of millinery and jewellery:
Originally studied textile design at Loughborough University, then freelanced for many years.

Tracey, millinery and jewellery:
Also from textile design at Loughborough, specialised in 3D illustrative work so was a freelance prop maker first.

Charlotte: millinery and jewellery:
Studied graphic design then 3D image working. She was originally hired at the RSC in the dyeing and painting department where she worked for 10 years.
