Designer Notes #1 (21/2)

16:17

Today we received the design we are going to be making, for me, a man's leopard print suit for one of the 'fashionistas' in the Korova Milkbar scene.

I am in a group with Harriette and Ellie S, also making animal print costumes for the same scene. Harriette is making a zebra print tulip dress and Ellie a giraffe print coat.

Group notes:
  • All mostly monochrome with little pops of colour - Harriette - blue gloves, Ellie - pink gloves and lining, mine - yellow/orange lining
  • Characters may end up with wigs, which will be sourced
  • Shoes and accessories sourced by design assistants (Abi, stage manager from Marjon doing sourcing too)
  • Let the design assistants know if think of something that needs sourcing, or find something hat could be useful
  • Book into the print room ASAP - easier and more affordable to print, and will get the boldest design
  • Collaborate so the prints look right together
  • Experiment with scale of print
  • Costumes may need to be overdressed (garments layered underneath e.g. polo necks) - leave plenty of room when fitting

My costume, notes from Fiona:
  • Making: jacket, tie, maybe trousers and shirt
  • Sourcing, ideally: white shirt, white or black trousers
  • Make quite simple with clean tailoring rather than lots of fabric manipulation
  • Waiting on final costume drawing from Fiona
I was given this make to build on tailoring skills from The Alchemist project. I need to improve my knowledge of fabrics by collecting and testing more samples and doing more research, and improve the finish of my costumes by researching proper pressing techniques for tailoring. I need to look more into the different canvases and components used in modern suit jackets. Fabric printing will be a completely new skill for me as well, as I've only done the final stage (printing) before rather than designing a print myself and exposing it onto a screen. Learning all the new processes on such a quick project is a little daunting but I am excited to try modern tailoring methods and especially screen printing, as this will give me freedom of fabric choice in the future, moving into third year, i.e. being able to design a print if I can't find the perfect fabric.

Following the meeting, we booked into the print room (exposing a design onto a screen and printing induction) as a group, for next Friday at 10am so we have time to research the animal prints and prepare artwork. For the induction, we need to bring the artwork printed on tracing paper or acetate.
